What is IaaS, what is DRaaS, what does an immutable backup mean: cloud and infrastructure terms in plain language.
Glossary
Renting server, storage and network resources as a service instead of buying them. Hardware, facility and the virtualization layer are with the provider; the operating system and applications are yours. Sentinel IaaS offers this in Tier III data centers, billed in TRY.
The user desktop runs in the data center and only the screen is delivered to the device. Data never lands on the device, and the desktop stays the same even if the device changes. Citrix DaaS, Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop are the most common examples.
Storing backups off-site, in the provider’s data center. The backup software can stay with you (Veeam Cloud Connect); the repository and verification are with the provider.
Keeping a running copy of your servers ready in a second data center and starting it there in a disaster. The difference from backup: not restoring, but continuing. Measured with RPO and RTO targets.
RPO (Recovery Point Objective) is the acceptable amount of data loss in time: a 15-minute RPO means you can lose at most 15 minutes of data. RTO (Recovery Time Objective) is the target time for the system to be running again.
A backup copy that nobody can delete or modify for a defined period (S3 Object Lock). Even if ransomware takes over an admin account, it cannot touch this copy.
In the Uptime Institute classification, a data center level where all power and cooling components are redundant and no shutdown is needed for maintenance; corresponds to a 99.98% annual availability design.
Hosting your own hardware in a data center by renting rack or per-U space. Power, cooling, security and internet are with the provider; the hardware is yours.
A network technology that manages connections between branches with central software and routes traffic by link quality. It lets you use internet links securely instead of, or alongside, MPLS.
EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) monitors behavior on the endpoint and stops suspicious processes. XDR extends the same approach to e-mail, network and cloud resources and correlates events on a single screen.
It requires organizations that provide internet access to keep access records (logs) for a defined period, timestamped and with verifiable integrity. Guest Wi-Fi (hotspot) is also in scope.
The discipline of managing cloud spend transparently across engineering, finance and business units: tagging, right-sizing, reservations and regular reporting.
